I love when I get a new order from a customer and get free reign on the design. I sat down a few nights ago and started working on a new design. I had created the cross stitch boot cuffs a month or so ago and really loved that stitch, so I just tweaked around with the stitches and came up with something really nice. I originally did the hat in black per my customer’s request and decided to show the hat, I needed a lighter color. When I started the teal color, as you can see, I added the bill.
Here is the pattern for the hat. I need to work on the instructions for the bill because I just made that up today and need to probably make some adjustments before I write those out.
Supplies:
- I used I Love this Yarn and Redheart Soft (4) worsted weight. The color I used for the hat in these directions was the black hat. When I followed my same directions using the Redheart, Seafoam, I used an I hook and the hat turned out smaller measuring 18 inches in diameter.
- Crochet Hook Size – J
- Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends.
Gauge: 8 stitches and 6 Rows = approximately 2 inches. (My measurements were taken from the rounds using the hdc st.
Adult Size Hat (When I completed my hat, the measurements were 22” and 7 ½” in length). The pictures of the hat are also shown with the hat turned inside out! I loved the way it looked!
On each round of the increase rows I will instruct you to ch 1. This does not count as an hdc throughout the pattern. You will ch 1 and hdc in the same space on each of the increase rows.
Special Instructions: To make the unique design, on round 8, you will ch 3 and dc in next 2 hdc. You will then YO and insert hook into the previous hdc prior to ch 3, YO and pull up loop on hook, pull through 2 loops, YO and pull through the remaining two loops. (Basically you are going to do a dc in the stitch but it will feel different.)
ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.
Round 1: ch 1, 12 hdc in ring, sl st in first hdc (12 st)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each hdc, sl st in first hdc (24 st)
Round 3: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc , repeat from * to *join by sl st in first hdc (32 st)
Round 4: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, *hdc in next 2 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (40 st)
Round 5: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next 3 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (48 st)
Round 6: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, hdc in next 4 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 5 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (56 st)
Round 7: ch 1 and hdc in same sp, *hdc in next 5 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc, *hdc in next 6 hdc, work 2 hdc in next hdc*, repeat from * to * join by sl st in first hdc (64 st)
At this point, you will end your increasing rounds unless you need a larger size. If you do need a larger hat, just continue to increase the size and then begin with the instructions on round 8.
Round 8: ch 1 and hdc in same space, hdc in next hdc and around, join by sl st in first hdc. (64 st)
Round 9: ch 3, dc in next 2 hdc, in previous st before ch 3, YO, insert hook and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops, *skip next hdc, dc in next 3 hdc, in skipped hdc, YO, insert hook and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO and pull through remaing two loops*, repeat from *to*, join by sl st in top of ch 3.(64 st) (See Special Instructions)
Round 10 – 16 (Repeat round 9)
Round 17: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next dc and around. Place a marker in your first sc because you will be working in the rounds for the next 4 rounds (64 st)
Round 18 – 20: sc in next sc and around (64 st). Fasten off and weave in ends.
I hope you enjoy the pattern.
