Crocheting Sisters

Our first ELK Studio – From the Heart event is almost complete.  Wendy has received everyone’s projects and can now send them to the Crochet for Cancer the San Francisco Chapter.  We had 10 women give 30 projects this month!!  I think that deserves a Woo Hoo!  Here’s a great photo taken from Wendy displaying our work!

ELK Studio - From the Heart October Charity Event 2013What an amazing feeling to see total strangers selflessly come together for the greater good.  I may not have talked to Jennifer, Wendy, Maria, Elena, Elizabeth, Liz, Arlette, Ashley or Ash on the phone, and I don’t know much about them personally but here’s what I do know……  I shared something on my heart to these women, and they wanted to help me.  I’ve watched them over the last month discuss this event and really support one another.  This mission ran like a well oiled machine with not one single hiccup and it’s because of my crocheting sisters.  I can count on them for great advice, moral support and friendship.

“Making it thru Monday” Review #25

Making it thru Monday by ELK Studio

It was another great week on “Making it thru Monday”.  The mind and creativity of a crocheter is always incredible, and the talent was certainly displayed this week.

Jennifer from Stew-art Creations made chair sock.s last week.  Yes, chair socks.  How many of us have hard wood floors that gets scratched because the chair doesn’t have a covering?  I’ve even tried those little adhesive pieces made for the bottom of a chair, and it works well but eventually has to be replaced.  Well, Jennifer has solved the problem with her chair socks, and she’s even written out the pattern for you.  If you want this great pattern, you can find it on Ravelry.  She has a great eye for capturing those fantastic pieces, and you can see all of them on her Facebook page.

Stew-Art Creations Making it thru Monday submission by ELK StudioOur next submission came from Elena of Beatrice Ryan Designs.  Remember how she had the free “Amazing Grace”  hats?  Now she’s written the headband pattern for us too!  If you want to know more about the story of the hat and headbands, you should check out her blog.  She also has a great cowl that I’ve made and it was super quick and easy.  All of Elena’s patterns are found on Ravelry as well!!

“Saturday Night Share” Feature #5

Saturday Night Share by Making it thru MondayIntroducing today’s “Saturday Night Share” with our featured guest, The Cotton Road.  Melissa Linton is the owner and took the time out of her busy schedule to allow ELK Studio and you (the readers) to get to know her a little better.

1.   Name

Melissa but most call me Mel

2. Name of business (Facebook, website, Etsy, etc.)

The Cotton Road, I have  an Etsy store, Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, website and blog all by that name.

3.How did you learn to crochet?

My aunt taught me to crochet when I was 12 years old. She make us hats, scarves even Barbie clothes out of thread. I would sit and watch her and one day asked if she could show me and I was hooked (pun intended)

4.  How long have you been crocheting?

I crocheted from about 12 to 17 took a little break and really got into cross stitching. I picked crochet back up in my early 20’s, but really in the last two years its exploded into a business.

5.  What is your favorite thing to crochet?

I have phases really. Right now its vintage inspired blankets and baskets! But I’ve gone through my hat and bootie phases too. I prefer to crochet for babies, so blankets and hats are my favorite.

6.  Is crocheting a hobby or business for you?

Both. I love to crochet its my stress reliever, and I get to profit a little from it.

7.  Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I would love to be crocheting full-time but I don’t write patterns never had the patience to do that, and I don’t think that I can just crochet and make a living. I think that the people who are successful write patterns too. So I’ll probably be doing the same as I am now. I would like to set more though at craft shows and maybe enter some crochet contests.

8.  Tell me something personal about yourself.

I am married to an amazingly supportive husband, I have a rambunctious 8 year old, a crazy 2-year-old blue heeler puppy, and I’m a vegetarian. 🙂
