End of April Giveaway Celebration!

Naturally Southern Part 2

Whew!  We made it!  I attended the SNAP Conference last week and was able to squeeze in some time during the sessions and “chat time” with my other yarnie friends to finish the beautiful edging of the Naturally Southern Shawl!  I hope you really like it.  I totally think it gives the shawl such an elegant look don’t you?

If this is the first you are seeing of this project, you’ll need to get started with the body of the Naturally Southern shawl first then come back here for the edging.

Supplies:

  1. Premier Cotton Fair, #2 Sport Weight Yarn, 52% Cotton, 48% Acrylic, 317 yards/100g, Colorway: Turquoise (2 balls) NOTE:  I had approximately 10 yards of yarn leftover after completing the pattern.  If you crochet “loose”, you may need 3 balls to complete the entire shawl (body and edging).
  2. Hook Size:  G/4.00
  3. Tapestry Needle for Weaving in the ends.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
RS – Right Side
sc – single crochet
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Gauge:  20 dc st and 8 rows = 4″

Finished Measurements: 74″ x 16″

Notes:

  • Multiples of 15 plus 2
  • Ch 3 counts as the first dc in the pattern. (See Alternative Technique)
    • Should you decide to use the alternative method, when the pattern states to ch 4, crochet the alternative method then chain 1.
    • Should you decide to use the alternative method, when the pattern states to ch 5, crochet the alternative method then chain 2.
  • Ch 4 counts as the first dc and ch 1 in the pattern (not using the alternative method).
  • Ch 5 counts as the first dc and ch 2 in the pattern (not using the alternative method).
  • On Row 1, you’ll want to make sure you have multiples of 15 plus 2, so I marked Row 66 with a stitch marker and row 72 with a stitch marker.  That is what I considered my “center” because it’s where there was no increasing in the shawl pattern.  I had 128 sc sts coming up to the first stitch marker, so I knew that I needed 128 sts going down the side after the other stitch marker.  That would give me 256 sts.  The closest to multiples of 15 plus 2 would be 272 sts.  So, I crocheted 16 sc sts from the first stitch marker to the second stitch marker.  Your count may be different that mine but this was just to show you an example of how I decided to do Row 1.  Because there were “extra” stitches between Rows 66-72, it gave the center a nice drape.

Special Stitches:

  • V-stitch (V-st):  (dc, ch 1, dc)
  • Picot:  ch 3, insert hook in back loop of first sc, yo, pull through back loop and stitch on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Row 1:  (RS) sl st in first st, ch 1, sc in first st, sc evenly across, turn.

Row 2:  Ch 3 (See Pattern Notes), skip next st, V-st (See Special Stitches), in next st, *skip next 2 sts, V-st in next st, repeat from * across until last 2 sts, skip next st, dc in last st, turn.

Row 3:  Ch 5, (See Pattern Notes), sc in next ch-1 sp, (ch 5, sc) in each ch-1 sp across to last ch-1 sp, ch 2,  dc in top of ch 3, turn.

Row 4:  Ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, *(sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5) 3 times, sc in next ch-5 sp**, 7 dc in next ch-5 sp, repeat from * across, ending last repeat at ** 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in top of ch 3, turn.

Row 5:  Ch 4 (See Pattern Notes), (dc in next st, ch 1) 3 times, *(sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5) 2 times, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 1**, (dc in next st, ch 1) 7 times, repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, (dc in next st, ch 1) 3 times, dc in top of ch 3, turn.

Row 6:  Ch 5, skip next ch-1 sp, (dc in next st, ch 2) 3 times, *sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, skip next ch-1 sp**, (dc in next st, ch 2) 7 times, repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, (dc in next st, ch 2) 3 times, dc in top of ch 3, turn.

Row 7:  Ch 1, sc in first st, picot (See Special Stitches), (sc in ch-2 sp, picot, dc in next dc) 3 times, *picot, sc in next ch-2 sp, picot**, (sc picot, sc) in next ch-5 sp, picot, (sc in next ch-2 sp, picot, dc in next dc) 7 times, repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **, (sc in ch-2 sp, picot, dc in next dc) 3 times, picot, sc in ch-2 sp, sc in last st.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.

Optional Top Edging:
With RS facing, sl st to first st, ch 1, sc in each sp evenly across.  Fasten off.  Weave in the ends.

Southern Trails Shawl Stitch Diagram Rows 21-26 Plus Edging

It’s the very last part to complete the Crochet-Along of the Southern Trails Shawl….the stitch diagram for the remaining rows plus the edging.  I hope you’ve enjoyed this CAL as much as I have.  Please show off your projects too!

The shawl project is the second project in the 5 month series of the Michael’s campaign.  If you didn’t see the first one…..go check out the Love Me More Scarf!  You’ll love it.

Let me give you a recap of the yarn if this is the first time you’ve seen it.

The yarn is a new addition to the Loops and Thread brand and is called Colorwheel.  There are 54 colors in the line, and I can tell you by the ones they sent me….you are gonna love it! There are so many shades that compliment one another, you could spend hours trying to figure out a color scheme for your project.  You’ll even get 12 variations of the color blue!  At this time it is only available in the stores but is expected to be available on line very soon!  I’ll be sure to come back and let you know as soon as it is available on line for sure!

Here are the specifications:

  • The yarn is a (#4) worsted weight yarn
  • 90 yards/1.75 oz/50 grams
  • Machine wash/tumble dry low
  • 100% anti-pilling
  • $1.99/skein

The yarn is super soft and would be what I would describe as a full #4 weight yarn.  I know some worsted weight can feel lighter but this yarn is a true worsted weight.

The Colorwheel yarn was released in over 800 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada.  If you want to know whether the yarn is in your local stores, Michael’s has a store finder on their page.  You can easily find the store closest to you and give them a call to see if they have it!

Supplies:

    1.  Loops and Threads Colorwheel, #4 Worsted Weight Yarn, 100% Anti-pilling Acrylic, 90 yards/50g, Colorways: White (2 skeins), Light Lilac (2 skeins), Lavendar (3 skeins), Purple (3 skeins)
    2. Hook Size:  J/6.00
    3. Tapestry Needle for Weaving in the ends.

Gauge:  12 dc and 8 rows = 4″

Schedule:

March 27th/Week 1 – Supply List and Schedule 
April 10th/Week 2 – Rows 1-10
April 17th/Week 3 – Rows 11-20
April 24th/Week 4 – Rows 21-26 plus edging (Current)

Pattern Notes:  Ch 3 is considered the first dc in the row. (Check out an alternative to the chain 3 method)

Special Stitches:
V-Stitch (V-st): (dc, ch 1, dc)
Shell:  (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc)

If you want a larger shawl project, repeat Rows 21-26 until you’ve reached your desired width then continue with the edging.
