Kodey’s Beanie – A Free Crochet Hat Pattern!

Here in Alabama it’s still quite warm, but I couldn’t wait….I wanted to start making my winter hats. I love this beanie hat pattern because it’s fairly easy to memorize and makes for a quick project. The cluster stitches gives it some texture too which I love using for my hats. I hope you will love it!

Pattern Instructions

Notes and Tips: The stitches for this hat are staggered, so if you notice at the end of a round I’ll say, “Join by sl st” but also tell you to “Join by sl st” in the beginning of a round too. Don’t forget to do the second sl st or your hat won’t look quite the way you had hoped! The cluster stitches will not stack on top of each other on each round but will be staggered as in the photo above. Also, if you crochet “loosely” you may want to drop a hook size. Check your gauge!

The pattern is written without the changing colors instructions. At the bottom of the page there will be pictures and instructions on how to use 2 colors and 3 colors.

Supplies:

Red Heart Soft/Red Heart Super Saver Approximately 180-200 yds. Colors used: Chocolate, Pink (Red Heart Super Saver), Seafoam, Wheat, White, Black, Turquoise (Red Heart Soft)
Hook – I/5.5mm
Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends

Gauge: 7 st and 4 rows = 2″ Measurements were taken using Red Heart Soft Yarn which gave me a smaller gauge than Red Heart Super Saver.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space
st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
Beg Cluster – ch 1, YO, insert hook in stitch, YO, draw through st, YO pull through 2 loops, YO insert in same st, YO, draw yarn through, YO, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Cluster -(YO, insert hook in stitch, YO, draw through st, YO pull through 2 loops) 2 times in same st, YO, insert in same st, YO, draw yarn through st, YO pull through 5 loops on hook

Notes:
ch 2 counts as first hdc unless otherwise indicated
ch 1 in beginning of pattern rounds does not count as a stitch

Pattern Instructions:

ch 4, sl st into first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1 (See Pattern Notes), 10 hdc in ring, join by sl st in first hdc (10 st)

Round 2: Ch 1 and 2 hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st and around, join by sl st in first hdc (20 st)

Round 3: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st , repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (30 st)

Round 4: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (40 st)

Round 5: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (50 st)

Round 6: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (60 st)

Round 7: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, *hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (70 st) Flat Circle Measures 6 ¼“ Fits 20-21” Skip Round 8 and move directly to Round 9 if you want this size hat.

Round 8: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *, join by sl st to first hdc (80 st) Flat Circle Measures 7” Fits 22-23”

Round 9: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and each st around, join by sl st to first hdc (80 st)

Round 10: Ch 2 (See Pattern Notes) and hdc in first st, *skip next st, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat from *to, join by sl st to top of 2^nd ch. (80 st)

Round 11: Sl st between first 2 hdc, ch 1, beg-cluster (See Special Stitches) between first 2 hdc, *ch 1, cluster (See Special Stitches) between next 2 hdc*, repeat from *to, sl st to first cluster. (80 st)

Round 12: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, ch 2(See Pattern Notes), hdc in same ch-1 sp, *skip next st, 2 hdc in next ch-1 sp*, repeat from *, join by sl st to top of 2^nd ch. (80 st)

Round 13-20: Repeat Rounds 11-12

Round 21: Ch 1 and hdc in first st, hdc in next st and each st around, join by sl st to first hdc. (80 st)

Round 22: ch 1 and sc in first st, sc in next st and each st around, join by sl st to first sc. (80 st)

Round 23-24: Repeat Round 22. Finished off and weave in the ends.

Color Changes for Hat

Using 3 colors (On this hat, you will continue Rounds 11-12 until you have completed 2 sequences of alternating the colors. You may only have enough length left for 2 rounds of sc stitches before you reach the desired length. (That’s all I could get before the hat became too long for me)
Rounds 1-9 Main color (Black)
Round 10 – Alternative Color 1 (Turquoise)
Round 11 – Alternative Color 2 (White)
Round 12 – Main color (Black)
Repeat color sequences of Rounds 10-12 until finished.

Using 2 colors.
Rounds 1-9 Main Color
Round 10 – Alternative Color
Repeat the color changes until Round 20 (Alternative Color)
Round 21 – Alternative Color
Rounds 22-24 – Main Color

Free Simple Crochet Rug Pattern

I’ve recently had new floors laid in my kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Its been very exciting to watch the old become new again with a freshness and beauty that I’ve waited on for a while. With that being said, the decor in the bathroom needed changing, and I wanted to spend my money wisely so a simple crochet rug was the perfect spot to save money in the bathroom.

The tile is a mixture of brown and cream colors mixed, so I needed to choose a neutral color to match. I had bought 3 large skeins of Lily Sugar’n Cream (the kind on the spool) a while back and never had used them. I pulled 2 down from the shelf, got my J hook and sat down to start the rug. I definitely wanted it to be strong so using 2 strands should help.

I know I’m showing the rug to you everywhere but the bathroom but the lighting in my house isn’t the best and photographing it this way is my only option. When I took the rug outside, the one in the grass showed the texture of the stitches well but not the size. Hmmmm…..the pool. I laid the rug down it gave me a great idea of making another one but with vibrant colors for the pool. What do you think? Anyway, here’s the pictures of the rug. I hope you will enjoy it.

Simple Crochet Rug Pattern Instructions

Supplies:
1. Hook: I/5.5 and J/6.0
2. Yarn: I used Sugar’n Cream Cotton Yarn – I used approximately 1400-1500 yds of yarn.
3. Tapestry Needle for sewing in the ends

Gauge: Gauge is not really important with this project because you can make the rug as big or small as you would like. The finished rug measures approximately 40″ x 20″.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sl st – slip st
st – stitches

Ch multiples of 8 plus 3 (I chained 112 +3)

Begin with J-Hook using 2 strands of yarn.

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next ch, *ch 3, skip next 3 ch, dc in next 5 ch,* repeat from *to* across, ending with dc in each of last 3 ch, turn

Row 2: Ch 3 (Counts as first dc here and throughout the pattern), dc in next 2 dc, * working over next ch-3 loop, work 3 dc in corresponding center ch st below**, dc in next 5 dc*, repeat from *to* ending last repeat at ** dc in next 2 dc, dc in top of 3rd ch, turn

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, *ch 3, skip next 3 dc, dc in next 5 dc*, repeat from *to* across to within last dc and turning ch, dc in next dc, dc in top of 3rd ch, turn.

Row 4: ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, *working over next ch-3 loop, work 3 dc in corresponding center dc 2 rows below, dc in next 5 dc*, repeat from *to* across to within last dc and turning ch, dc in next dc, dc in top of 3rd ch, turn

Repeat Rows 3-6 until you have reached your desired size. Do not cut your yarn. Begin the instructions for the edging.

Edging:
Begin edging using the I-Hook. It will tighten your edging and make a nice finish. For my rug, I had 112 stitches for the length on each side, and 60 stitches on the short sides for a total of 344 stitches around. Keep in mind if your rug is a different size or you are using one strand of yarn, your total stitch count may not be the same as mine.

Round 1: Once you finish your last row, 3 sc in the corner, sc evenly down the side, 3 sc in the corner, sc in next 3 sc, *3 hdc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc*, repeat *to* across to within last 3 sc, sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly down the side, sc in each dc across, join by sl st to first sc in corner.

Round 2: ch 1 and sc in same sp, *3 sc in center corner st, sc across until next corner*, Repeat *to* around, join by sl st to first sc.

Round 3-4: Repeat Round 2, Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Dixie Charm – A Free Summer Crochet Shawl Pattern

You know that I have to really love this Dixie Charm shawl for me to take a picture of myself and stick it on the blog! I attended my granddaughter’s dedication yesterday and went to the closest to choose something to wear. I bought the dress in the photo a couple of years ago while on a beach vacation in Florida. I thought it would be good for the service but definitely needed something to cover my shoulders. I usually wear a small white top but remembered I had just finished the shawl. I thought it matched perfectly! It was so much fun to wear and made me feel great knowing that I made it. I hope you enjoy the shawl and feel so elegant wearing yours too! I love it on Tiara too don’t you?

Pattern Instructions for Dixie Charm

Supplies:
1. Hook: I/5.5
2. Yarn: I used Patons Silk Bamboo approximately 510 yards (5 skeins), but I think this project would be great using any worsted weight yarn or even sock yarn would be beautiful.
3. Tapestry Needle for sewing in the ends.

Gauge: 20 st and 9 rows = 4”. (I don’t think gauge is a real issue here because people can just keep going until they have reach their desired length and width).

Note: Each row increases by 8 st.

Ch 3, sl st to first ch to make ring.
Row 1: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, turn (8 st)

Row 2: ch 3, (counts as first dc here and throughout, 2 dc in same sp, dc in next 2 st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center ch-2 sp , dc in next 2 st, 3 dc in top of 3rd ch, turn (16 st)

Row 3: ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, dc in next 6 st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in center ch-2 sp, dc in next 6 st, 3 dc in top of 3rd ch, turn, (24 st)

Edging of Shawl

Row 1: ch 1 and sc in same sp, [ch 5, skip next 3 st, sc in next st] repeat until 2 st from center, ch 5, sc in center ch-2 sp, ch 5, skip 2 st, sc in next st, *ch 5, skip next 3 st, sc in next st*, repeat from *to*, turn

Row 2: ch 1, *(2 sc, hdc, dc, hdc, 2 sc) in next ch 5 sp*, repeat *to* until end. Fasten off.

Optional: You can finish off the shawl by crocheting sc stitches evenly down the top of the shawl. I didn’t do it for my project because I liked it without, but depending on your yarn choice, it may look great.
